Sustainable Employability Skills

Employers and employees expect certain types of behaviour in the workplace, making good conduct at work a good key skill to learn. This course will teach the learners how maintain a positive mental attitude towards their tasks in the workplace.

Course Content at Entry Level:

Conduct at Work: Know the appropriate behaviours and conduct for a place of work; Demonstrate good conduct; Carry out a review of their own conduct.

Working in a Team: Indentify the individual skills and key rules essential for effective teamwork; Know how to match their strengths and interests to a team task; Know what role they are expected to assume and identify their own roles and responsibilities in achieving the task; Review their performance.

Investigating Rights and Responsibilities at Work: Understand that they have rights in the workplace; Understand that they should respect the rights of others in the workplace; Understand that employees have responsibilities within the workplace; Know where to seek advice for problems that may arise at work.

Managing Your Own Health at Work: Know why it is important to be healthy at work; Know how to keep healthy at work; Understand how different working environments and occupations could affect their health in different ways.

Setting and Meeting Targets at Work: Understand how to set personal targets at work and identify aspects of job roles which require setting and reviewing the target; Agree a personal target with the appropriate person and record this in an appropriate manner; Carry out a review of personal target previously set and identify at least one aspect of that target that has been successfully achieved.

Solving Work Related Problems: Be aware that a problem or issue has arisen which requires problem solving skills; Be able to access sources of help and advice that will assist them in solving work related problems; Know a range of appropriate ways to solve problems which may have arisen in the workplace.

Presenting Accurate Documents: Know why it is important to record information accurately in the workplace; Be able to produce legible, grammatically accurate handwritten and electronic documents; Check all documents for errors and ensure that they are presented in the correct format.

Taking Notes in Meetings: Know the different ways of taking notes in meetings / classes; Be able to write up notes of meetings / classes appropriately and in the correct format.

Speaking Confidently at Work: Contribute to discussions and conversions in the workplace, both formally and informally; Be able to use language which is appropriate for the workplace; Know why it is important to speak confidently at work.

Course Content at Level 1

Positive Attitudes and Behaviours at Work: Understand how positive attitudes and behaviours at work benefit themselves and the workplace; Demonstrate a range of positive attitudes and behaviours in the workplace; Evaluate their own conduct, identifying strengths and any areas for improvement.

Working in a Team: Understand that effective teamwork depends on the cooperation of all members of a team; Understand how their strengths, skills and experience may contribute to a team task; Understand their roles and responsibilities as well as those of their team members in relation to a given task; Work positively as a member of a team and evaluate their performance.

Building Working Relationships with Colleagues: Understand why it is important to get on well with all colleagues; Be able to work positively with employers and / or managers; Be able to work positively with peers in the workplace.

Building Working Relationships with Customers: Understand that the way they present themselves makes an impression on the client or customer; Know that the organisations usually have protocols in place for dealing with clients / customers; Interact with clients or customers positively in line with the given protocols.

Investigating Rights and Responsibilities at Work: Understand what rights and responsibilities are; Understand that both employers and employees have certain responsibilities and rights in the workplace; Know about sources of guidance and information relating to workplace rights and responsibilities.

Managing Your Health at Work: Understand that different sectors and areas of work have different health requirements; Know how to maintain good health by identifying health risks for a chosen area at work.

Setting and Meeting Targets at Work: Understand the importance of setting and meeting targets in the workplace; Set personal targets in line with organisational procedures; Review personal targets in line with organisational procedures.

Solving Work Related Problems: Understand the types of problems / issues that can arise in the working environment; Indentify the sources of help available for dealing with problems at work; Suggest suitable solutions to a range of potential work related problems.

Summarising Documents: Know how to distinguish between the main points and supporting details in a document; Know that summaries are produced for specific audiences and purposes; Be able to summarise key points of straightforward documents.

Contributing to Meetings: Know how to prepare for meetings; Be able to contribute effectively at meetings.

Course Content at Level 2

Effectiveness at Work: Understand the attributes of effective working; Demonstrate effective working practice; Evaluate their own practice.

Working in a Team: Understand the advantages and disadvantages of taking part in a team task; Understand the need for a team to work to an agreed code of conduct; be able to recognise the skills, strengths and experience that others bring to the team; Understand how to allocate responsibilities and roles when undertaking a team task; Work positively as a team member; Reflect on the performance of a team identifying success and weaknesses.

Learning from More Experienced People: Understand situations where they may interact with more experienced people; Understand how more experienced people work effectively; Understand how they can improve their performance by learning from those who have more experience; Review what they have learned.

Building Working Relationships with Colleagues: Understand how people in the workplace depend on one another; Understand how an individual’s behaviour can affect the working environment; Be able to demonstrate positive behaviours that promote effective working.

Building Working Relationships with Customers: Understand how a client’s or customer’s interaction with employees can influence their opinion of the organisation as a whole; Understand why organisations normally have standard protocol in place for dealing with customers; Interact positively with customers in line with given company or organisation protocol.

Investigating Rights and Responsibilities at Work: Understand why rights and responsibilities are important in the workplace; Understand why employers and employees have certain rights and responsibilities; Identify and access guidance and information relating to workplace rights and responsibilities.

Managing Your Health at Work: Understand the employer’s role in maintaining good health at work; Know the services that employers should provide to ensure a healthy workforce and a healthy working environment; Know the sources of help and guidance for maintaining good health at work.

Setting and Meeting Targets: Understand how to develop and confirm personal targets; Review their own progress in meeting personal targets.

Solving Work Related Problems: Understand the types of work related problems facing employers and employees; Consider possible solutions to workplace problems; Apply appropriate solutions to deal with problems arising in the workplace.

Summarising Documents: Distinguish between the key points and the supporting material in documents of several pages; Understand that they will need to tailor a summary according to its purpose and intended audience; Summarise a document of several pages in a style that is in keeping with its original intended audience and purpose.

Contributing to Meetings: Know how to prepare for meetings; Be able to contribute effectively to meetings.
